The city sprawls against the background of the snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus Mountains and the shores of the Black Sea. The population was estimated to be 395,012, according to 2006 census. The city has been selected to be the host of the Olympic winter games in 2014, as well as the Russian Formula 1 Grand Prix from 2014 until at least 2020 and it is also one of the host cities for the 2018 FIFA world cup. Sochi enjoys a Mediterranean sub-tropical climate with comfortable summers (average 24 °C (75 °F) during the day and 16 °C (61 °F) at night period from May to October) and with mild winters (average 11 °C (52 °F) during the day and 4 °C (39 °F) at night in the period from December to March. Usually, the summer season lasts 6 months (from May to October). December, January, February and March are the coldest months. Sochi is almost unique among larger Russian cities as having some aspects of a humid sub-tropical resort. Apart from the attractive Caucasus Mountains, pebble and sand beaches, the city attracts holidaymakers with its subtropical vegetation, numerous parks and monuments. When the city is home to the annual film festival, about two million people visit Greater Sochi each summer. An increasing number of foreign investors give stable growth in the rent real estate Sochi market, given the city’s stronger economic fundamentals and its higher international standing.
